As an artist inspired by the art and culture of Japan, I feel compelled to assist in the wake of the terrible natural disaster which has befallen the Japanese people. It is at times like these that I am humbled to count the many blessings I have in my life, and I hope to provide comfort and support to those that are most vulnerable and in greatest need. To that end, I am donating 100% of the sale price of this kimono to the Save the Children-Japan Earthquake Tsunami Children in Emergency Fund.

"Summer" is a contemporary kimono form, luscious pinks with my bouquet of flowers. It is a handpainted work of art, made on natural silk. My process starts with 6 yds. of greige silk on which my designs are painted. Perfect to adorn to the walls of your home, or to be worn on the body. Created in 2009, 50" x 64".

Spring 2011 - Long Art Kimonos

Dear Friends and Colleagues -

While there is still snow on the ground in our studio in Stowe, VT our thoughts are turning to Spring and Summer. We are pleased to share with you a few images from our latest photo shoot featuring some of my Fine Art Kimonos.

I have added three new bold and breathtaking works of art to my line of Fine Art Kimonos inspired by a special journey I took this past year into the life and work of Marc Chagall.

I was able to take a journey to St Paul de Vence with a dear friend, Jane, last spring and our time together was extraordinary and life-enriching. Cobblestone streets, dining in cafes, and visiting the exhibits of Marc Chagall created an air rich for creation - that Jane introduced me to this artist in such an intimate and glorious setting made it even more special.

The three kimonos reflect the images of a set of paintings and one of Chagall's stained glass windows at the Musee National Chagall. In honor of the stained glass windows I created "St. Paul de Vence". It is filled with blues and very spiritual and special to me. The second and third kimonos "Creation" and "Vitebsk" follow a biblically-inspired set of paintings by Chagall. In them, you can see the Bird of Life, and the Burning Bush - important symbols of creation and life.

On a personal note, I am back refreshed and relaxed from a trip to the Bahamas and a few days basking in the lively excitement of South Beach. The beauty of the Bahamas has inspired me in the past and guided my hand in such projects as my cool, lushly colored "Exuma Island" Kimono. I am full of inspiration for new creations as I work in the coming months and look forward to sharing the journey with you.

The New Year has brought some wonderful new opportunities to my studio. I am pleased to announce that my work is being exhibited/sold at two new locations in Vermont.

My short kimonos from my wearable line are being exhibited in the Design Center at the Stowe Craft Gallery in Stowe, VT. The Stowe Craft Gallery and Design Center is located in the heart of Stowe, VT and features the finest craft and design from Vermont and beyond, it is a pleasure to be one of their exhibiting artists.

You can stop in to see my work on the wall at 55 Mountain Rd. in Stowe. Pictured above in the Stowe Craft Gallery Design Center is "Puccini", a short handpainted crepe de chine art piece with tapered sleeves and shawl collar. It is shown on my specially designed adjustable wall mount.

Stowe, Vermont September 10, 2010— Vermont fiber artist Roselle Abramowitz is featured in a solo exhibition at The Island Gallery in Bainbridge Island, WA during the month of September. This is the first west coast exhibition for Abramowitz, an artist who creates one-of-a-kind handpainted art kimonos from her studio in Stowe, VT. When asked about her work, she shares: “The form of the kimono has inspired my art. They are presented as abstract handpainted works of art, made on natural silk.” In addition to her long and short fine art kimonos, Roselle also produces a line of ready-to-wear clothing. The Island Gallery features internationally recognized fine artists working in traditional and craft media. “It's exciting to have my work shown in a new community. The support for my new creations has been so gratifying.” says Abramowitz.

Born in Germany, self-taught fiber artist Roselle Abramowitz revealed her creative side as a child, creating her own dress-up clothes from bits of crepe paper. Sewing has been part of her life ever since. After moving to Montreal, Canada, she completed a course of study at Cotnoir & Caponi in pattern-making and draping, for a time working with her husband designing men's shirts and ties. In her own studio, Roselle began exploring the world of art quilts - utilizing non-traditional quilt fabrics, satisfied only when developing unusual color and pattern variations in her designs. Working with interior designers, she opened her own studio in Old Montreal producing one-of-a-kind handpainted quilts.

Eighteen years ago, Roselle moved permanently to her home and studio in Stowe, VT, and began a deeper exploration of the kimono form. Roselle had long considered the kimono form to be mysterious and sensual, and set out to make it uniquely her own. After considerable research, she created a modern kimono; shortening the sleeves, simplifying the design, and creating new textures and styles based upon her own creative vision. Her love of color, sense of adventure, and playful spirit are very much in evidence in her work. Roselle cites her life experiences and the people, places, and cultures she has encountered in her travels around the world as influences upon her eclectic, but thoroughly beautiful, art. Roselle’s fine art kimonos as well as her other collections of wearable art adorn women and homes across the country and around the world.

On a beautiful sunny day, we had a photo shoot of art kimonos. It was a wonderful space; high ceilings, white background reflected light through large studio windows. Our photographer, Lindsay, with the help of our marketing person, Deidre Healy, set up a "Gallery" space.

Mud Cloth/Bogolan - Africa's Mysterious Textile

Excerpts from an article by Robert Irwin and Magie Relph, 2009 in Handwerkenzondergrenzen (Dutch Textile Magazine)

"For centuries the Bamana people, and to a lesser extent the Dogon, have used mud and other natural dyes to apply symbolically powerful designs to their cloth. In Bambara, Mali’s main language, bogo means “earth” and lan means “strip”. For the Dogon, the equivalent translation is “leaf” and “cloth”.

The raw materials of mud cloth are basic. Cotton, leaves, bark, and, of course, mud.

The process and the division of labour to make the cloth are equally bedded in tradition. Women hand-spin yarn of locally grown cotton. Men weave this undyed yarn into long strips, about 10 cm wide and 20 metres long. Next, they sew the strips together. The artist then creates designs using a special mud. The mud is gathered from the centre of ponds that have dried up after the rainy season.

Traditional mud cloth artists draw upon a large repertoire of design elements, which all have names and carry with them deep, symbolic meanings. For example: A square with a dot in the centre represents a woman who is still too young to marry and a line with spikes represent the much feared tail of a scorpion.

In America, Roselle Abramowitz has used mud cloth in her distinctive wearable art creations."

I have just launched a website dedicated to showcasing my abstract art installation kimonos www.roselleabramowitz.com. For 18 years I have created kimonos in my Stowe, VT studio. The pieces shown on this website are handpainted works of art, made on natural silk. The drama and delicacy of these pieces installed in a space are very alluring.

My work has been exhibited in public spaces, and sold in galleries throughout the United States and Canada.

The form of the kimono has always inspired my art. My kimonos are an eclectic mix of the past and present, influenced by travel, life and art. These inspirations lead me on a journey of color, abstractness, and playfulness; a process whereby I never know exactly where a piece is headed when I set out to create it.

Spent October in Vence, France with my friend Jane. Beautiful weather - out and about each day seeing new sights. Nice, Beaulieu, Monaco, Cannes, Saint Paul de Vence were amoung my favorites. Chagall Museum in Nice most inspirational with vivid colors-wine red, brillant blue, golds. Will be incorporating these sights into future kimono pieces.

Our Studio Sale on June 20th-There was an art piece for everyone at all different price ranges. Our new Market Bags were a great success. We sold multiples! We had an adorable salesperson, Barret, a new massage therapy graduate helping to write up sales. Ruth and Roselle were busy explaining the process and making people happy with their new purchases. It's always nice to sell to the local community.

Spring is coming and the red breasted robin is knocking at my window. Happens every year-he thinks there is another bird and he wants to establish his territory.

We are busy designing new art pieces. Working on a kimono vest in handpainted sheer silk organza and a shorter version of our traditional kimono jacket.

Recently, I travelled to Exuma Islands off the Bahamas. Thanks to Steve and Cindy for their lovely hospitality. Amazing coral and the colors of the water in shades of turquoise and purple. This is sure to inspire my future work.

American Craft Council Baltimore Show and Home to Stowe

Just got back from 8 days of the Wholesale and Retail ACC Baltimore Show. Retail was better than my expectations. Public very supportive of the 700+ show artists. They bought glass, jewelry, pottery, furniture, art to wear, etc. The ACC Baltimore Show is a destination weekend for many.
Looking forward to following up with new store contacts.
The ACC early morning workshops were very helpful.

Found some great images of a show I did in Montreal at the Saidye Bronfman Centre of the Arts in 1997.

It was a beautiful gallery space in which I was privileged to be able to show my kimono art pieces.

American Craft Council Baltimore Show-Feb 24-March 1, 2009

We will be heading to Baltimore ACC Wholesale/Retail Show in Feb for the second time. We really enjoyed the special artist workshops, including learning how to blog. It was great to meet so many buyers and retail clients who appreciate art.

Wholesale: We will be showing wonderful new "natural" art pieces. Handpainted hemp and linen with great easy to wear linen pants.

Retail: We will have a new twist- items that retail under $100. Stay tune to see our new, creative art items using our handpainted fabrics.

Pieced Painter's Shirts

This is our first effort of "piecing without borders" from our recent workshop. This shirt uses washed dupioni silks with a stand up collar and covered buttons.

The Economy:
We are very aware of the state of the economy. We want to make our all our pieces affordable and fun. Keeping this is mind, we are working on a line of "Event Bags". It is worn across the front and uses our wonderful silks. Each bag will be a piece of art.

"Quilting without Borders"

We took a quilting workshop with Denyse Schmidt this weekend in Bridgeport, CT. It was quilting without borders, intuitive, learning to let go and explore color and design. Fun to play with fabric all day. Great group of fellow quilters.

We are planning to explore using this technique in our Painter's Shirt designs as well as our kimonos.

Landscape and Fabric Show at Bryan Gallery in Jeffersonville, Vermont

Every Window is Full of Color!

Here in Stowe, Vermont the fall foliage has just peaked. Every window in the studio is full of beautiful fall colors. The tops of the hills have already gone grey, but the valleys are still full of the vibrant hues that draw in tourists from around the globe.

Sand Dunes are high next to the Atlantic Ocean. I will be travelling Namibia and Cape Town, South Africa in October. I will be very inspired by the primitive and mysterious landscapes. While I'm in Cape Town, the annual flower show is taking place. I'm sure this will stimulate my artistic creativity.

This time of year, we have lots of pieces out and about. Our art pieces are for sale in New York City, Chicago, Sante Fe, San Francisco, Texas and many other locations around the country. Fall is always an exciting time to show new works. The piece above it called "Everson". It is a Double Layer Handpainted Silk Chiffon Art Piece lined with black chiffon. The abstract design and colors lend themselves to a feminine flow of energy surrounding the wearer.

In November 2008, we will be part of the "New Vista-Landscape on Fabric" Show at the Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, VT. This show will feature artists whose works use landscape imagery on fabrics. The works are both two and three dimentional.

This piece above is called "Tibetan Sky" and was inspired by my trip to Tibet. The sky and earth meet in the early morning light. You could touch the sky with its stars.

We had our annual photo shoot earlier this month. Again this year, we are using an historic house in Morrisville, Vermont. Orah Moore, our photographer, does a great job. Thank you to our beautiful models: Stephanie, Emily, Tina and Theresa.
We have a new line of "Naturals" in addition to our Handpainted Crepe De Chine pieces, Wool and Fleece. Lots of new "Root Source" pieces-African Mudcloth and Indigo, Indian Applique and Japanese Shibori.

Summer at the Studio

ArtWear Unlimited hosted a trunk show of many art to wear designers. We have sold well with Kathy and Linda for the last 3 years.
Casual was what worked well this year. Recycled denim and mudcloth jackets.

Evolution of an Art Piece

All of our fabric starts out as "greige" goods, off-white. The fabric is stretched out on long wooden tables and painted by hand and steamed to set the color. Each piece is individually cut depending on the design. It is then expertly sewn and presented to our clients. We have sold hundreds of kimonos to clients around the world.

Dissapointing . Event flat, did see some of our clients and that was rewarding. I feel there should be a new look with open space instead of the same enclosed booths. The public walks around and looks confused and not happy. We should show our pieces more as "installations".
Taking a pause. Want to rethink for future shows. Working on attracting new stores.
Aware of the state of the Economy but want to rise above it.

Busy week designing our new "pocket vest". Tweeking shape so that it does not look like the "flying nun". Exciting to use new materials, hemp and natural silk together. In Stowe, found a wonderful pattern designer, Annika, from Sweden. She will make our life much simpler, adjusting our designs to actual paper patterns. She and her husband, Jed, own the beautiful The Stowe Inn. No snow days so Ruth, my assistant, mother of three children, could work a full week. Got a new store in Texas, 1550 Gallery, who is interested in our art pieces. Sold some major pieces, including a long handpainted crepe wedding kimono to Hands On in Key West, FL. Gearing up for the CraftBoston Show at the end of the month.

Last minute decision to participate in this years CraftBoston Show. This is our third year and we are looking forward to connecting with our friends and customers in the Boston area. We are bringing a grouping of silk hand painted jackets, event bags and our new silk "eternity" scarves. You will find me and my assistant, Ruth Brown, at booth #150. Small but cozy.

Winter in Vermont

March 5th,2008 I am sitting in my studio with so much snow around me. I feel I am in an iglooooooooo. Wonderful for skiing and snowshoeing. It has a magic of quiet stillness with pure white snow. I am longing for Spring.
